Labor leaders to give out peach roses and white ribbons to pro-GMA solons

Militant labor group pledges all the way support for impeachment raps vs. Arroyo, vows to further intensify mass protests

Militant labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) today said they will actively support the impeachment raps against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. KMU is set to participate in the mass for truth and justice at the House of Representatives this afternoon to show that they will do every possible means to remove Arroyo as President.

“Legislative actions like impeachment are not enough. We will continue with our mass protests in the streets. The impeachment procedure will be an opportune venue to further expose Arroyo’s wrongdoings and to broaden the legislative front against Arroyo.”

KMU Spokesperson Presto Suyat said various sectoral groups will hold a support picket tomorrow outside Batasang Pambansa when the HOR Committee on Justice holds its first hearing on the impeachment complaints against Arroyo filed by the opposition.

“We will take our lobby work seriously and will focus on convincing more legislators to support the impeachment raps vs. Arroyo. We will campaign for Arroyo’s impeachment up to the congressional district levels. We will conduct room-to-room visits to all pro-administration legislators and give them peach roses and white ribbons as a sign of our pure intent to cleanse the bureaucracy and rid it of corrupt and burdensome officials especially Arroyo.”

Suyat said they will carry out same measures as they did for the P125 wage bill campaign.

“We have instructed our local membership to hold dialogues and meetings with their respective representatives to convince them on the necessity of pushing through with the impeachment complaints against Arroyo. We are also pushing for the immediate passage of the P125 across-the board wage hike bill for private sector and P3,000 salary hike bill for government employees. The House leadership promised us that after they legislate the EVAT, the P125 wage bill will be their priority concern.”

Meanwhile, the labor group said that more witnesses against the First Family are expected to come out soon. “With the First Family’s record of notoriety, we can expect for more expose against them,” Suyat concluded. ###

Workers, consumers and transport groups preparing to launch strikes once Supreme Court lifts EVAT restraining order

Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) said they are now preparing to launch nationwide labor and transport strikes in response to the Arroyo government’s possible lifting of the restraining order on the implementation of the Expanded Value Added Tax (EVAT) this month.

“Industrial protests and transport strikes will be our response to the government’s stubborn efforts to impose Charter Change while neglecting more urgent matters like the spiraling cost of oil products, consumer goods and public utilities,” said KMU Spokesperson Presto Suyat.

“The strikes are scheduled to take place immediately after the lifting of EVAT TRO and its eventual implementation. We are preparing our ranks, especially labor unions, urban poor groups and transport organizations under KMU for the nationwide strike. The upcoming transport strike will be the next wave of political action against Arroyo after the massive people’s protests last SONA which successfully gathered over a hundred thousand people supporting calls for Arroyo’s ouster,” said Suyat.

“Prices of petroleum products, utilities including electricity, water, telecommunications, medical and legal services and almost all consumer goods will double once EVAT is in effect. This will create an even more intense economic pandemonium. A consumers’ revolt is inevitable once the government insists on implementing the EVAT amid popular calls for Mrs. Arroyo’s resignation. We are compelled to take on drastic actions to confront the execution of EVAT,” Suyat said.

Meanwhile, KMU Secretary General Joel Maglunsod stressed that the possible lifting of the Supreme Court imposed TRO on EVAT was hinted in the statements of outgoing US Charge d’ Affairs Joseph Mussomeli when he said that the Arroyo government should focus and work double time on implementing urgent economic reforms that will keep the Philippine economy afloat for foreign businesses and investments amidst the burning political situation.

“U.S. is still banking on Arroyo to implement EVAT and make the most out of the government’s so-called revenue generation measures. As we all know, proceeds of the EVAT will definitely go to foreign debt servicing. EVAT will further bleed out consumers, especially the poor working people. This early, oil companies are projecting increases of as much as P3-6 per liter on prices of petroleum products once EVAT takes effect,” the labor leader concluded. ###
